David P. Mastagni, Managing Partner (Civil Litigation, Labor Law)

David P. Mastagni is the founder and managing partner of Mastagni, Holstedt, Amick, Miller, Johnsen & Uhrhammer. David established the firm in 1976 with a commitment to creating long-term client relationships by providing the highest quality representation available to meet all of a client's legal needs. David has carried that philosophy forward over 30 years, and today presides over one of northern California's premier, AV-rated law firms providing representation in complex civil litigation, public and private sector labor and employment law, personal injury, workers' compensation, and general law practice.

In practice since 1973, David has broad expertise in all aspects of civil litigation, including personal injury, product liability, automobile collisions, construction accidents, slip and fall, professional negligence, and legal and medical malpractice; civil rights litigation; labor and employment law; insurance bad faith claims; wage and hour litigation; and administrative law.

David has tried to verdict over 300 proceedings, including over 100 jury trials in both state and federal courts. He has participated in over 450 appellate cases at the state and federal levels, including actions before the U.S. Supreme Court.

As the firm's lead attorney, David was responsible in 2003 for obtaining the largest law enforcement binding arbitration award in the U.S. David advises public and private labor unions on contract issues, grievances, and binding arbitration.

David has given the firm a high profile at the state Capitol, testifying before the Legislature on legislation involving peace officers, labor unions, injured workers, and consumer litigation. He participated in drafting several current statutes, and advises clients on election law and political action committees.

David is a lecturer for the Peace Officers Research Association of California (PORAC) and a longtime panel attorney for the PORAC Legal Defense Fund. He has lectured widely over the years on issues of concern to public safety officers and labor unions.

David is a member of the Sacramento County Bar Association; State Bar of California; California Trial Lawyers Association; Capitol City Trial Lawyers Association; and the Association of Trial Lawyers of America. He is a Judge Pro Tem for the Sacramento County Superior Court, and serves as an arbitrator and mediator in complex civil litigation matters.

David served in the U.S. Army National Guard in the Vietnam era. He graduated from Sacramento State University and obtained his law degree at the McGeorge School of Law, University of the Pacific. He sits on the Dean's Council at the McGeorge School of Law.

John R. Holstedt, Managing Partner (Workers' Compensation)

John Holstedt is the managing partner for the Workers' Compensation Department of Mastagni, Holstedt, Amick, Miller, Johnsen & Uhrhammer. John has practiced with the firm since 1979, and has litigated primarily in workers' compensation, including both trial and appellate work. He has participated in oral argument before the Third District Court of Appeal on both personal injury and workers' compensation issues.

John was a Captain in the United States Air Force, serving from June of 1969 through April of 1974. John completed a tour of duty in Vietnam from June 1970 to June 1971, and was awarded an Air Medal with four oak leaf clusters and the Distinguished Flying Cross.

John graduated from the University of Wyoming in 1969. He received his juris doctor from McGeorge School of Law, University of the Pacific, in 1978 and is a member of Phi Theta Kappa.

Michael D. Amick, Partner (Workers' Compensation)

Michael Amick is a supervising partner in the Workers' Compensation Department of Mastagni, Holstedt, Amick, Miller, Johnsen & Uhrhammer. Mike joined the law firm in 1990 after a 20-year career in the United States Air Force. He primarily represents Stockton/San Joaquin County-area clients before the Stockton Workers' Compensation Appeals Board.

While in the U.S. Air Force from 1966-1986, Mike completed five combat tours in southeast Asia. He flew 200 combat missions there as a B-52 crewmember, and was a B-52 academic and flight instructor, B-52 Wing Electronic Warfare Staff Officer, Airborne Command Post Operations Planner, SR-71 mission planner, and was in charge of developing war plans for the SR-71 and U-2 surveillance aircraft.

Mike graduated from Colorado State University in 1966, and obtained his M.L.A. from Texas Christian University in 1977. He received his law degree from Lincoln Law University in 1988.

Christopher W. Miller, Supervising Partner (Labor Law)

Christopher Miller supervises the Labor Department of Mastagni, Holstedt, Amick, Miller, Johnsen & Uhrhammer. Christopher is a former Stanislaus County prosecutor emphasizing labor and employment law representation and civil and criminal defense of peace officers. He is lead counsel for the California Peace Officers Association Legal Services Program, the Sacramento County Deputy Sheriffs Association, the Sacramento County Probation Association, and Operating Engineers Local Union No. 3 (Public Safety Division).

Christopher is a seasoned trial lawyer with over 40 jury trials to his credit as a prosecutor and peace officer defense attorney. He has defended peace officers in criminal prosecutions for homicide, excessive force, on-duty sexual assault, and prisoner neglect. He successfully represented the Manteca MCOPS in the first open criminal grand jury proceeding in San Joaquin County, and was successful in a motion to dismiss charges against a San Joaquin County sheriff's deputy in the second open grand jury proceeding in that county.

Christopher is a recognized expert on Pitchess and Brady issues, and has participated in legislative efforts to amend the Penal Code to protect peace officer personnel records. He has appeared on broadcast programs involving peace officer rights and is a frequent contributor to the PORAC News, the California Peace Officers Association newsletter, and other client publications.

Christopher was a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, serving in the Persian Gulf and Pacific Fleet, and was a legislative assistant on Capitol Hill in the 1980s. He graduated cum laude from the University of California at Santa Barbara and received his law degree from the University of San Diego School of Law, where he was selected a National Member of The Order of Barristers.

Craig E. Johnsen, Partner (Workers' Compensation)

Craig Johnsen is a supervising partner in the Workers' Compensation Department of Mastagni, Holstedt, Amick, Miller, Johnsen & Uhrhammer. Craig has been with the firm since 1994, and practices workers' compensation litigation throughout California.

As a former group supervisor and youth counselor for the California Department of Corrections (CDC), Craig primarily represents correctional officers and other public safety employees in workers' compensation hearings, trials and appeals. Craig attended law school while working for CDC at the DeWitt Nelson Training School in Stockton.

Craig is a graduate of the University of California School of Law, Davis, and the State University of New York at Cortland. He has a master's degree in English from the University of the Pacific. He was an instructor for the San Joaquin Delta College while employed by CDC, and was a legal intern for the California Correctional Peace Officers Association (CCPOA).

Amanda Uhrhammer, Supervising Partner (Civil Litigation)

Amanda Uhrhammer supervises the Civil Litigation Department of Mastagni, Holstedt, Amick, Miller, Johnsen & Uhrhammer. Her practice focuses on litigation, plaintiff and defense, in employment law, ERISA, professional negligence, personal injury and appellate practice. Amanda is trust counsel for the Insurance and Benefits Trust of PORAC and the California State Firefighters Employee Welfare Benefit Corporation.

Amanda has significant civil litigation experience at the trial and appellate levels in both state and federal jurisdictions. She is admitted to practice in the United States Supreme Court, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and in all California districts of the U.S. District Court.

Amanda, a longtime resident of the Sacramento area, graduated with a B.A. in French from the University of California at Davis and obtained her juris doctor degree from McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento.
