Ken Martin joins the firm with over 26 years of experience with the City of San Rafael Fire Department as a Firefighter, Engineer and Fire Captain, and 25 years of negotiating experience, most recently with the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) Local 1775.

Ken began negotiating for the San Rafael Firefighters Association (SRFA) in 1992 and was elected Vice President of SRFA in 1995, serving four years in that position until he was elected President in 1999. During his time as Vice President and after his Presidency, Ken also served as lead negotiator for SRFA. Across his many roles, Ken was instrumental in negotiating multiple contacts, implementing the Firefighter’s Bill of Rights within Marin County, establishing and maintaining fair disciplinary practices, developing the San Rafael Urban Search and Rescue, confined space and trench rescue teams, initiating and strategizing the consolidation of Marin County fire departments, and ensuring departmental compliance with OSHA. He also served as the City of San Rafael Fire Department Fire Academy’s lead instructor from 2009 until his retirement.

Since 2008, Ken has worked with IAFF Local 1775, the union umbrella for all of Marin County’s paid firefighters. He was elected Vice President in 2008 and since 2012 has acted as Local 1775’s Political Director, a position created specifically for him. Ken’s Local 1775 time has mirrored that of his time with SRFA; his focus is the safety, well-being and fair compensation of public employees achieved through political action and community education. Ken completed each of the IAFF political training academy and communications training academy, as well as multiple affiliate leadership trainings focusing on leadership, negotiation and political strategy. Ken served as lead negotiator for multiple Marin County fire departments and as the representative for multiple disciplinary investigations.
